Mana Ake: Tuning Into Kids
Teacher Only Day: Friday 30th August
Parents, a reminder from the last newsletter:
We will be closed for a Teacher Only Day on Friday 30 August. Our Year 0-4 teachers and relievers will be attending Structured Literacy training in Christchurch, our Year 5-6 teachers will be at school reviewing spelling and writing programmes. Parents will need to make arrangements for the care of their child on this date.
Attendance Data This Term
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Board has set a target of 65% of our school population attending school for 90% of the term. This is equivalent to 178 children out of 275, missing no more than 5 days of school for the term. So far our data for the term looks like this:
Week 1: 225 children or 81.95% of all children were at school 90% of the time
Week 2: 192 children or 70.1% of all children were at school 90% of the time
Week 3: 184 children or 67.1% of all children were at school 90% of the time
Week 4: 188 children or 68.5% of all children were at school 90% of the time
As you can see, our attendance has dropped significantly from the first week. This greatly impacts learning and classroom programmes.
What is most alarming are the total statistics for the first four weeks back at school. At the moment only 156 children or 56.89% of all children have attended school in the first four weeks for 90% of the time we are open. We were open for 20 school days in the first four weeks. In order to achieve 90% plus attendance, a child needed to attend 18 of those 20 days. We had only 156 children out of 275 achieve this.
From here our next steps are to analyse reasons why children are not attending. It is vital that as parents you tells us why your child cannot be at school that day. We also record the type of sickness as this helps us know if we are dealing with a type that is contagious and likely to spread.
Our policy states that if a student is absent 3 days or more, the school has the right to ask for a medical certificate.
From this analysis it is likely that we will be contacting families by letter to notify of irregular or large periods of absenteeism.
House Time
Every Friday we come together as a school for House Time, Kapahaka or Singing and Buddy Class time. Today it was House Time and everyone was out enjoying a variety of games.

Congratulations to everyone who danced, taught and supported our children. Road Closure
Important Notice Re: Harland St Road Closure
There will be a road closure in place at the Harland Street - Graham Street intersection from 02/09/2024 - 04/09/2024.
It will be a full close from 131 Harland St to 26 Grahams Road while planned fibre work is completed. There will be a diversion in place, and Harland Street will be accessible from the Jane Street end.
Parking At School
It is important for everyone's safety that parents do not park in the bus bays, disabled carpark and on the dotted yellow lines around the school when picking up and dropping off at school.
This is also a legal requirement along with a speed limit of 20km/h past a school bus while it is loading and unloading.
Our road patrol have appreciated all the drivers who slow down when approaching our crossing, even if the barriers arms are closed.
Book Bags
A reminder to parents to please check their child's book bag. These often contain their home reading, notices and library books. We are teaching our children to use them to protect our books whilst they are in their bags.
Uniform Required
At times we have given out replacement uniform if a child has had an accident or got very wet/muddy. We have not seen a number of these uniform pieces returned. If this is the case for your child, this is a reminder to please return it.
We also require any unwanted uniform, especially in sizes 5-8. If you have updated your child's uniform and don't know what to do with the older set, please bring it into school. Thank you.
Teacher Professional Development
Next week our Year 0-4 teachers will be attending three days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) of professional development in Christchurch. Their focus is structured literacy. Our school will be open Monday to Thursday for instruction.
On Wednesday and Thursday, if your child is in Rooms 1-9, they will not have their usual classroom teacher. We have endeavoured to employ as many experienced and known teachers for these two days while your teacher is offsite.
On Friday the school will close for instruction. The Year 0-4 teachers will work in Christchurch while our Year 5-6 teachers will work locally.
Please speak to your teacher if you require more detail about what is happening next week.
